Dolly Parton, the beloved country music icon, has long been known for her larger-than-life personality, but behind the glitz and glamour lies a deeply personal love story. As fans mourn the passing of her husband, Carl Dean, on March 10, Dolly’s heartfelt tribute on Instagram resonated with many: “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words cannot do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

Though Carl’s passing marks a painful chapter in Dolly’s life, her love for him will forever be immortalized through her music, especially in her poignant song “If You Hadn’t Been There.” Released in the days following his death, Parton shared that her love for Carl began when she was just 18 years old. “We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song,” she wrote, dedicating the song to him as “the star of my life story.”

However, what many might not know is that Dolly and Carl didn’t just share a life together — they also celebrated their love in a special and unexpected way on their 50th wedding anniversary. In an exclusive interview, Dolly opened up about why she decided to re-marry Carl, reflecting on their humble wedding in 1966 and how it felt incomplete.

When Dolly and Carl initially tied the knot, she had just signed with Monument Records, and the label’s head, Fred Foster, asked her to delay her wedding for a year. “Fred had invested a lot of money in me and my career, and he wanted to make sure I could focus on my work without distractions,” Dolly recalled. At the time, Dolly, ever the professional, agreed. However, she and Carl couldn’t wait long. The couple quietly wed in Ringgold, Georgia, at a Baptist church, keeping the ceremony small and private. Dolly’s mother made her a simple white dress for the occasion, and the only guests were Carl’s family and Dolly’s mother.

Despite the understated nature of their original wedding, Dolly admitted she missed the grand wedding experience — the dress, the celebration, the pictures. “We felt we never got a chance to do our whole big wedding, and I missed having a wedding dress and all that,” Dolly confessed. And so, to mark their 50 years of love, Dolly and Carl decided to re-marry, this time with all the bells and whistles.

“We’re going to wed again and invite a lot of folks,” Dolly said. “We’ll take pictures, and I might even sell some to the rag mags for The Imagination Library (her children’s book charity).” True to her nature, Dolly turned a personal moment into an opportunity to give back to others, ensuring that even the happiest of occasions served a greater purpose.

Now, as Dolly reflects on their nearly six-decade-long marriage, the decision to re-marry Carl takes on even greater significance. It was a symbolic act, a way to celebrate their enduring love, which Dolly now carries forward in both her heart and her music. Their love story, like all great love stories, lives on — and it will continue to inspire for years to come.
