Calista Flockhart has always been vocal about her admiration for her husband, Harrison Ford, but it’s his evolution as a father that she finds most remarkable. In a recent interview with The New York Times, the 60-year-old actress shared her thoughts on Harrison’s “matured” approach to parenting, especially with their son, Liam, who is now 24 years old.
Calista and Harrison’s relationship began in 2002, when she had recently adopted Liam and Harrison was already a father of four. Despite their 23-year age gap and the complexities of blending their families, the couple’s bond grew stronger, and Harrison later adopted Liam as his own. Reflecting on their journey, Calista opened up about how Harrison’s parenting style has evolved over the years.
“I think he was a really good father in a lot of ways, and maybe because he was on round two or round three, so he had matured and grown up,” Calista explained. “He has really evolved into being a good father.” She couldn’t help but gush about his relationship with their son, saying, “He’s such a good father to his kids now. I love his kids, my stepkids.”
For Harrison, being a father has always been a priority, but he has been candid about how his busy career once made it challenging to fully engage in the lives of his older children. Looking back, he has no regrets but has acknowledged the learning curve of fatherhood. However, with Liam, he seems to have embraced a more grounded and involved role.
When the couple first met at the Golden Globe Awards in January 2002, Liam was just starting to walk. Harrison didn’t hesitate to embrace the new role of father to a young child, even joking, “I had four children already, and I can’t count that well, so it didn’t make that much difference.” His easygoing nature has undoubtedly helped their relationship thrive, despite their age difference. Calista jokingly noted that it was also Harrison’s “immaturity” that made the 22-year gap seem insignificant, adding a lighthearted twist to their deep connection.
The couple’s relationship has been built on a foundation of mutual respect and unwavering support. “We’ve had our ups, we’ve had downs like everybody else – mostly ups, which is good – and we just stay together,” Calista reflected. “He’s the person that I want to call when something happens. That knee-jerk thing where I have to call Harrison.”
Their story is a testament to the fact that love, commitment, and the evolution of parenthood can create a lasting and fulfilling partnership. As for their initial meeting, Harrison fondly recalls the moment when he first “lured” Calista to his home, and they danced the night away. “We’ve sort of been together ever since,” Harrison said, reminiscing about their serendipitous first date.
Over two decades later, their relationship remains strong, with Harrison continuing to grow as a father, partner, and person. It’s clear that for Calista, the man she calls her husband is not only a talented actor but a devoted father, too.
As Calista gears up for her exciting return to television with Ryan Murphy’s highly anticipated show, fans of the couple can’t help but admire how they’ve blended their families and nurtured their relationship – proof that love, patience, and understanding can defy age and bring people closer together.
