Rod Stewart, the legendary singer behind classics like Maggie May, is facing an unexpected challenge that no one would have predicted for a man who has spent decades behind the wheel of iconic Italian sports cars. At 79, Stewart is reluctantly selling off his beloved collection of hybrid sports cars, citing the worsening pothole situation on the roads near his Essex home as the main reason for parting ways with these “works of art.”
For over 50 years, Stewart has been an avid collector and driver of luxury sports cars, particularly Italian brands renowned for their sleek designs and powerful performance. His passion for these vehicles has become well-known, and in a recent post on Instagram, the singer shared an emotional update with his fans.
“I am extremely fortunate and eternally grateful to be the owner of these five beautiful hybrid sports cars, which, in my opinion, are true ‘works of art,’” Stewart wrote. However, despite his deep affection for these cars, he lamented that the potholes on local roads have become too dangerous for such fine machines. “Unfortunately, because of the potholes on our roads, I may have to find new owners for them,” he added.
The post struck a chord with Stewart’s fans, many of whom voiced their sympathy and support. One fan remarked, “Rod – you lucky man, but you’ve worked hard over the years and deserve these fabulous cars!” Another commented, “Sad that the UK roads are in such poor condition… I’m careful with all of my cars for the same reasons.”
While many expressed sorrow over Stewart’s decision, a few cheeky commenters offered practical solutions. “You could pay for some pothole repairs if you really wanted to set an example,” one wrote, while another offered, “I live in a pothole-free area. I’d be glad to store one of those beauties in my garage!”
The issue of potholes is something Stewart has tackled head-on in the past. In 2022, the rock star took matters into his own hands when he donned a high-vis jacket and, along with a group of friends, filled in potholes on a local road near his Harlow home. Stewart had grown frustrated with the state of the road, which had caused damage to his prized Ferrari, and he was determined to do something about it.
At the time, he said, “My Ferrari can’t get through here at all! This is the state of the road near where I live, and it’s been like this for ages.” Stewart’s efforts were met with a reprimand from Essex Council, who warned that making repairs without proper authorization could lead to liability in case of future accidents. Nevertheless, the publicity generated by Stewart’s DIY repairs seemed to have had an effect, as the council eventually promised to resurface the road.
A source close to Stewart told The Sun that the council’s response was likely influenced by the singer’s efforts. “It seems his publicity has finally shamed the council into fixing the road,” the source said. “Sir Rod is going to be absolutely chuffed. Good for him.”
Although Stewart’s decision to sell his cars may come as a disappointment to his fans, it highlights a larger issue that affects many road users in the UK today. The condition of the country’s infrastructure has been a longstanding problem, with potholes becoming a growing concern for drivers across the nation. Despite his best efforts, even a superstar like Stewart is finding it increasingly difficult to navigate these treacherous roads in the cars he loves.
For now, it seems Stewart will have to bid farewell to his prized collection, but his legacy as both a rock legend and an unexpected advocate for better road maintenance is sure to live on. Whether or not the roads near his Essex home will improve remains to be seen, but Stewart’s fight to repair them continues to serve as a reminder that even the most glamorous of lives are impacted by the simplest of everyday issues—like a pothole in the road.
