A Super Bowl three-peat is within reach for the Kansas City Chiefs this season, and so is another accolade for Patrick Mahomes at the ESPYs. For the second consecutive year, Mahomes has achieved a remarkable feat by winning both the Best Athlete in Male Sports and Best NFL Player awards at the ESPYs.

The announcement of the top male athlete award took place on Thursday during the live ESPY Awards program. Although Mahomes wasn’t present to accept the award in person, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid attended the event with his wife, Tammy, and accepted the honor on Mahomes’ behalf.

“I’ve been around this kid for a few years now, and to watch him grow as a football player, as a teammate, and as a leader has been phenomenal,” Reid said. “But more than that, to watch him grow as a father and as a husband has probably been the best part of that. We’re very lucky to have him in Kansas City.”

The other finalists for the top athlete award included Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers, golfer Scottie Scheffler, and Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers. Despite the stiff competition, Mahomes’ outstanding performance and leadership on and off the field earned him the prestigious title.

Mahomes expressed his gratitude via Twitter, saying, “Incredible athletes across the board in this category. Blessed and honored to bring home this award again. Thanks to the fans and @ESPYS. Big dawg Andy crushed too.”

The Best NFL Player award was announced on Wednesday, further solidifying Mahomes’ dominance in the sport. However, the Chiefs did not secure the Team of the Year award, which went to the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team, recognized for their undefeated 38-0 record and NCAA championship victory.

In another ESPY moment, the Chiefs were highlighted as the opposing team in the Best Play category. The winning play featured quarterback Lamar Jackson catching his own pass. During the AFC Championship Game, a pass from Jackson was batted into the air by Chiefs safety Justin Reid. Jackson quickly reacted, catching the ball and turning it into a 13-yard gain. Despite the impressive play, the Chiefs emerged victorious with a 17-10 win, advancing to Super Bowl LVIII where they defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime to clinch their second straight NFL championship.

As Mahomes and the Chiefs continue to make history, their sights are set on achieving an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat, a testament to their skill, determination, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
