In a heartfelt reflection, Adam Lambert opened up about his journey on ‘American Idol’ and the personal challenges he faced as a gay contestant. Lambert, who first gained widespread fame during the show’s eighth season in 2009, recently shared his candid thoughts in a video profile with Them, revealing his initial doubts about participating in the series.

Lambert, now 42, came out during high school, eight years before his stint on the iconic talent show. Despite his undeniable talent, he was wary about joining ‘American Idol’ due to the industry’s historical treatment of homosexual contestants. “I never thought that it was a show that I’d be able to do,” Lambert admitted. “I’m a theatre kid. Also, I’m gay, which never seemed to really land very well in that show. I mean, there definitely were a few, but they all kind of got not taken seriously.”

The journey was not without its hurdles. During his time on ‘American Idol,’ photos of Lambert kissing an ex-boyfriend began circulating online, threatening to overshadow his performances. However, the show’s publicist provided unwavering support, allowing Lambert to handle the situation with grace and authenticity. “She was so great. She was like, ‘Well, how do you wanna deal with it?’ And so I just said to a reporter, I’m like, ‘Yeah. That’s me.’ That’s all I said,” Lambert recounted.

Despite the risk of losing fans, Lambert stood firm in his identity. “I think I lost some fans at that point, but I always said to myself, ‘Well, those aren’t the fans I want anyway.'” This moment of clarity reinforced his commitment to authenticity, even in the face of potential backlash.

Reflecting on the incident last February, Lambert shared with People magazine the emotional toll it took on him. He confessed to feeling “ashamed” when the photos first leaked, describing the experience as a step backward. Yet, the adversity ultimately strengthened his resolve and shaped his artistic vision. “It made me stronger and informed the kind of art that I wanted to make,” he affirmed.

Adam Lambert’s journey on ‘American Idol’ serves as a powerful testament to his resilience and unwavering authenticity. Despite the challenges, he emerged stronger, paving the way for greater acceptance and representation within the entertainment industry.
