In a heartfelt revelation, Slash, the iconic guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, opened up about the overwhelming relief and joy he felt when he and frontman Axl Rose finally reconciled, leading to the band’s triumphant comeback. After years of acrimony and estrangement, the two rock legends buried the hatchet, reigniting the explosive chemistry that had once defined the band.
The legendary rock band, Guns N’ Roses, saw its original lineup fragment when Slash officially left the band in 1996. During the years of separation, Axl Rose continued to perform under the GNR banner with various lineups, while Slash pursued other musical endeavors. Despite repeated denials that a reunion would ever happen, the tides turned in 2016. The Not In This Lifetime tour marked the official return of Slash, Axl, and bassist Duff McKagan, much to the delight of fans worldwide.
Reflecting on the pivotal moment of reconciliation, Slash shared his emotions on the Abe Kanan Show. “It was great. I mean, God, it’s a long story, but it was great when Axl and I started talking again, because I missed him,” Slash revealed. The years of animosity between them had only grown worse with time, creating a seemingly insurmountable barrier. However, when they finally reconnected, the experience was transformative.
“We had developed so much animosity that it just got worse and worse as time went on. So when we finally spoke and I started talking about playing, God, it was a huge kind of weight lifted off of our shoulders, and it was exciting to get back together,” Slash recounted.
The reunion was more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It reignited the unique chemistry that had propelled Guns N’ Roses to stardom in the late ’80s and early ’90s. “And there was that chemistry that happens that you sort of forget about. How intense that is when you get on stage together or just working together,” Slash explained. The magic of their collaboration was palpable, reminding both musicians of the powerful bond they shared.
“So, yeah, it’s really cool, and I’m really happy that we managed to get past all that,” Slash concluded. Their reunion has not only rejuvenated their live performances but also sparked hopes for new music. With the band still enjoying immense popularity on the live circuit, fans eagerly anticipate what the future holds.
Excitingly, Slash recently hinted at plans for a new Guns N’ Roses album, their first since 2008’s Chinese Democracy. If realized, this album would be the first to feature Slash on guitar since 1993’s The Spaghetti Incident?, marking a significant milestone in the band’s storied history.
As the world watches, the rekindled partnership between Slash and Axl Rose stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to heal old wounds and forge new paths forward.
