In Eminem’s latest creative endeavor, he reimagines the iconic Spider-Man origin story, not with a radioactive spider but with a goat bite that transforms him into a superhero of the rap world. This inventive twist is showcased in his new single, “Tobey,” which will be featured on his upcoming studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), set to drop on July 12.

The track brings together the dynamic trio of Eminem, Big Sean, and BabyTron, who collectively channel the three Spider-Men pointing at each other meme. Eminem cleverly intertwines his narrative with the superhero lore, rapping in the third verse, “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider, me? Must’ve got bit by a goat,” and further cementing his legendary status in the rap game with, “Way beyond crazy, Shady gone, but hey, maybe, I am the GOAT/With Big Sean and BabyTron, and that’s why they be on the shit they be on.”

BabyTron kicks off the song with the first verse and chorus, delivering lines about luxury and success. The Michigan rapper’s energetic flow sets the stage for Big Sean, another Detroit native, who proudly references their hometown: “I got new addresses, I got no reception/I got love and hate comin’ from both directions/Bitch, I come from the D where they BMFing/Where they movin’ them kis like a chord progression.” The city’s influence on all three artists adds a rich layer of authenticity to “Tobey.”

Accompanying the single is a highly anticipated music video, scheduled for release on July 5. Directed by Cole Bennett, the preview features a chilling scene: Big Sean and BabyTron standing behind Eminem, who dons a Jason Voorhees mask while dramatically wielding a chainsaw. Blood spurts from an off-screen figure, symbolizing the violent end of Eminem’s infamous alter ego, Slim Shady.

This dramatic visual is part of Eminem’s larger narrative arc leading up to The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). In a bold move, Eminem has been building up to this moment of closure for Slim Shady, even publishing a faux obituary in the Detroit Free Press in May. The obituary poignantly stated: “His complex and tortured existence has come to a close, and the legacy he leaves behind is no closer to resolution than the manner in which this character departed this world.”

The obituary further reflected on the tumultuous existence of Slim Shady: “Ultimately, the very things that seemed to be the tools he used became calling cards that defined an existence that could only come to a sudden and horrific end … May he truly find the peace in an afterlife that he could not find on Earth.”

Eminem’s reimagining of his career and persona through the lens of superhero mythology not only pays homage to pop culture but also signifies a transformative chapter in his artistic journey. With “Tobey,” fans can expect a powerful collaboration that weaves together storytelling, personal evolution, and the relentless spirit of Detroit’s finest rappers.
