Why Ariana Grande Listens to ‘Some’ of Her Songs and Has Others She Prefers to ‘Not Hear Ever Again’

Ariana Grande’s music journey has been both a personal and transformative experience. At 30, the singer has created a vast repertoire that resonates with millions. Yet, she has a complex relationship with her songs, as revealed during her appearance on the Podcrushed podcast released on June 17.

“It’s interesting because sometimes, sometimes I like to listen to it,” Grande shared. “In the process of making it, I listen to only it, and I’m like obsessive beyond, beyond imagination, in a way that’s like, ‘Wow, get help.'”

This obsession during the creative process is a testament to her dedication, but not all songs remain favorites. Some tracks, she admits, hold memories she’d rather not revisit. “There are some I prefer to ‘not hear ever again’ because of ‘what they hold,'” Grande confessed. This sentiment reflects how deeply her music intertwines with personal experiences, both joyous and painful.

However, her relationship with her music isn’t static. It’s “constantly evolving.” Over time, performing certain songs has reshaped her feelings towards them. “Certain ones that I necessarily didn’t like as much as I liked my favorites when I was younger have become so important to me because I love seeing what they do for the audience and what they have done for people,” Grande explained.

The connection her fans have with her music profoundly influences her own perception. Hearing how her songs impact listeners can change her relationship with them. This evolving bond is particularly evident with her latest album, Eternal Sunshine, which she still listens to occasionally.

Grande’s dual career as a singer and actor requires balancing both worlds. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes halted production on her latest acting project, Wicked, leading her back to music. “When we were filming, I was very, very — didn’t want to know that that part of my life existed. I just wanted to be a completely different person,” Grande said, emphasizing her desire to keep her acting and music careers distinct.

When she finally returned to music, the creation process was swift and organic. “Sometimes, if it feels like it’s coming out of you that way, it’s like, don’t question it. Just kind of go with it,” she noted. Yet, the realization that the world would hear her work was daunting.

After the release of Eternal Sunshine, Grande expressed the emotional weight of sharing her music. “It’s impossible to put into words what I’ve been feeling this week,” she wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post on March 18. “This album is most special to me for many reasons and just holds so much. Sharing it has re-opened a lot of little and big feelings alike and it has been an emotional week in many ways!”

Ariana Grande’s candid reflections reveal the deeply personal and evolving nature of her relationship with her music. While some tracks may be too laden with memories to revisit, others grow in significance through their impact on fans, showcasing the dynamic bond between an artist and their creations.
