The Secret Beer Ad: Why Patrick Mahomes’ Commercial Will Stay Hidden Until He Retires

In an unusual twist, Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has to wait until he hangs up his cleats to see his latest commercial masterpiece air. Mahomes, 28, recently filmed an ad for Coors Light that captured the imagination of fans and stirred quite a bit of buzz online. But thanks to NFL regulations, the commercial is now locked away in a “Coors Light Time Capsule” until the day he retires from professional football.
The Ad That Almost Was
The advertisement, which was released on June 26, showcased Mahomes in a dramatic, cinematic setting. Standing atop a moving train cutting through snowy landscapes, Mahomes delivered a heroic line, “Looks like we’ve got company!” Just as the action was heating up, the scene abruptly cut to a producer storming onto the set, shouting, “Stop shooting! Turn the cameras off! Kill the fan.”
When Mahomes, puzzled, asked why they had to stop, the producer pointed out an NFL rule: “No player shall be allowed to promote a beer while they play professional football, no matter how cool and high stakes it is. They even bolded that last part.”
With a resigned look, Mahomes lamented, “This was supposed to be my big break.” The commercial then took a whimsical turn as a crew member suggested that the ad be preserved in a time capsule, to be unearthed only when Mahomes retires and is finally permitted to promote beer. The video ended with Mahomes burying the time capsule, leaving fans eagerly awaiting its eventual release.
A Creative Marketing Loophole
The ingenious marketing tactic has not gone unnoticed. Fans praised Coors Light for its creative approach to navigating NFL restrictions. One YouTuber commented, “I literally just laughed out loud at work!” Another added, “THIS is making great ideas to sell your beer.”
Despite the NFL’s restrictions, this isn’t Mahomes’ first rodeo with Coors Light. In 2022, he appeared in a commercial promoting a Coors flashlight, cleverly sidestepping the direct promotion of alcohol. The following year, he starred in another memorable ad, this time interacting with a Coors Light Bear—a playful nod to his partnership with the brand. The voiceover in the ad humorously stated, “Coors Light Bear is zero percent adult beverage and 100 percent mammal. It’s the perfect bear to hang out with after a long day,” as Mahomes and the bear enjoyed snacks on the couch and even played golf together.
Looking Ahead
As Mahomes gears up for the 2024-2025 NFL season, beginning with a September 5 game against the Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium, fans can only imagine what other creative collaborations he and Coors Light might have up their sleeves. The hidden commercial has not only added to Mahomes’ mystique but also demonstrated the power of innovative marketing in the face of strict regulations.
For now, the world will have to wait to see Mahomes’ “big break” with Coors Light. But if the past is any indication, the eventual unveiling will be well worth the wait. Until then, Mahomes continues to shine on the field, leaving fans eagerly anticipating both his football feats and his off-field endeavors.
