Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes: ‘We Didn’t Play Our Best Last Year!’

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense finished as a top-10 unit in the league, propelling the team to their second consecutive Super Bowl victory and their third in the last five years. While the spotlight often shines on the offense—with stars like tight end Travis Kelce and quarterback Patrick Mahomes—it’s clear that the defense played a crucial role in their dynastic success last season.
Despite the triumphs, Patrick Mahomes, the NFL All-Pro quarterback, acknowledges that the Chiefs’ offense didn’t perform to their highest standards. Mahomes, who set a career-high in interceptions—a stat no quarterback wants to lead in—believes the team must improve to achieve an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl win.
“I think it’s two things,” Mahomes began. “One is just the confidence that the defense has off the year they had last year. You can see that they’re trying to build on that. Then offensively, obviously, we felt like we didn’t play our best last year and even though we won, we knew we had a lot of places to improve.”
Striving for continuous improvement has been a hallmark of Mahomes’ career since he entered the league. This relentless pursuit of excellence has influenced his offensive teammates, fostering a culture of constant enhancement.
“I think guys had that mentality coming into OTAs and minicamp,” Mahomes explained. “That’s something that I think has gotten the best out of everybody is that every single day [you all] hear it – we’re talking trash but it’s in a good way then we go off, we talk about it after practice of what we can do better. It’s been a great OTAs and minicamp, one of the best that I think that I’ve been a part of.”
With the Chiefs now on a summer break before training camp begins on July 22, there’s an air of optimism and determination surrounding the team. If the offense improves and the defense continues its upward trajectory, the Chiefs could be on the brink of achieving something historic come January.
As the NFL world watches, Patrick Mahomes and his teammates are gearing up for what could be a season for the ages, driven by their commitment to excellence and a shared belief that their best is yet to come.
