Cillian Murphy’s upcoming film, Small Things Like These, is set to captivate audiences when it is released. The film, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, has already garnered significant praise from critics.

Small Things Like These is an adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Irish author Claire Keegan. Lionsgate recently acquired the film for release in the US, Ireland, and the UK. However, a release date is yet to be announced. Murphy stars as the lead character, who uncovers secrets about a local Magdalene Laundry while confronting truths about his own past.

Critics have lauded Murphy’s performance and the film overall. This role marks Murphy’s return to the big screen following his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer.

IndieWire praised the film’s layered narrative, stating, “Part of the power of Small Things Like These lies in its Trojan horse nature. This is a political allegory disguised as a character study, a reflection on national guilt and moral complicity, wrapped inside the experiences of one man, in one small town, standing in for the whole of Ireland, and possibly the world.”

The Hollywood Reporter also commended the film, highlighting Murphy’s sensitive portrayal: “Led with aching sensitivity by Murphy (also a producer, alongside his Oppenheimer cast mate Matt Damon), this is a somber, unhurried drama that takes its cue from the seeming quietness of the title and is all the more intensely moving for it. It ends at what might be a dramatically charged mid-point for many stories, but the filmmakers simply let it linger here, to great effect.”

Katie Luxford of Next Best Picture emphasized the film’s intimate and provocative nature: “It feels intimate and forces the audience to confront their own complicity in the prevalent evil surrounding them.”

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian expressed his deep engagement with the film: “I was so rapt, so caught up in this film, that I wasn’t aware that it was going to be the ending until the screen faded to black. It is an absorbing, committed drama.”

Tim Robey of The Daily Telegraph highlighted Murphy’s exceptional performance: “Small Things Like These is a tight-lipped Irish drama even more suffused with sadness than the log-line implies, and shouldered with hypnotic grace by a very special Cillian Murphy in his first post-Oppenheimer role.”

Stephen A. Russell of Time Out remarked on Murphy’s profound portrayal: “It’s a profound performance by Murphy – perhaps even more so in fewer words than Oppenheimer – as Bill’s anger burns with tragic urgency.”

As anticipation builds for the release of Small Things Like These, one thing is certain: Cillian Murphy’s latest role is poised to leave a lasting impact on audiences and critics alike.
