The role of Daenerys Targaryen, one of the most iconic characters in television history, is synonymous with Emilia Clarke’s unforgettable portrayal. However, her journey to becoming the Mother of Dragons wasn’t as straightforward as fans might think. In a recent interview with The Guardian, showrunner David Benioff shed light on how Clarke claimed the role and what made her the undeniable choice.

The Audition Process: Finding Daenerys

Back in 2010, when the Game of Thrones casting process was in full swing, many talented actresses auditioned for the role of Daenerys. The character had two key elements: a weak, timid girl sold into marriage and the fierce Mother of Dragons who would one day conquer kingdoms. Showrunners needed someone who could embody both sides of Daenerys’ transformation.

Among those who auditioned were well-known actresses, including MCU star Elizabeth Olsen and Tamzin Merchant, the latter having initially played Daenerys in the original pilot. But according to Benioff, many actresses struggled to balance both aspects of the character.

“Many actresses nailed the vulnerable side of Daenerys but faltered when portraying her powerful dragon queen persona,” Benioff explained. “Others could embody the strength and fire, but lacked the fragility. Only Emilia made both work.”

Emilia Clarke: The “One True Queen”

What made Clarke’s audition so special? Benioff recalled that from the moment she read for the part, she stood out. “Emilia brought something unique to the role,” he said. “Her ability to show both the vulnerability of Daenerys and her evolution into a powerful, commanding figure was what we needed. I couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role—she was our one true queen.”

This duality was crucial for Daenerys’ character arc. The audience needed to believe that the timid girl in the early episodes could one day command dragons and armies.

From a Scrapped Pilot to Stardom

Before Clarke took on the role, actress Tamzin Merchant had been cast as Daenerys for the original pilot episode. However, after the pilot was scrapped, the showrunners made the difficult decision to recast the character. In stepped Emilia Clarke—a relative unknown at the time. It was a gamble that would not only define Clarke’s career but also elevate Game of Thrones to unparalleled heights.

For Clarke, this role would be her big break. It marked her first major project, and she embraced the challenge with everything she had. From the first season to the series finale, Clarke’s portrayal captivated millions of fans around the world.

The Legacy of Daenerys Targaryen

Clarke’s embodiment of Daenerys is etched into the cultural landscape of television. While the character’s journey may have had its ups and downs, her portrayal remains one of the most memorable aspects of the show.

Looking back, Benioff concluded, “Emilia was Daenerys from the moment she auditioned. She brought the character to life in a way that no one else could, and we were lucky to have her lead us through this epic journey.”

As fans continue to debate the ending of Game of Thrones, one thing remains clear: no one could have played Daenerys Targaryen quite like Emilia Clarke.
