Dakota Johnson, known for her role in the groundbreaking film Fifty Shades of Grey, has always been candid about her journey to self-discovery, particularly when it comes to her sexuality. In a recent interview with Bustle, the 34-year-old actress shared her gratitude for growing up in a household that fostered open-mindedness and self-exploration.
Johnson, the daughter of Hollywood icons Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, reflected on how her upbringing shaped her understanding of sexuality. “I was lucky that I grew up with a mom who was very open—at times maybe too open—about sexuality,” she told Bustle. “But it was always like, whatever you’re into and when you want to have sex, you just let me know, and we’ll get birth control.”
This open approach, Johnson explained, allowed her to navigate her sexuality on her own terms. “It was really healthy, and it made me feel like I was allowed to discover my sexuality on my own, which I think is such a gift,” she said. In today’s world, where conversations about gender and sexual identity have become more prominent, Johnson’s experience stands out as a progressive model. “We’ve progressed so much in some societies, for people to be allowed to say that they feel neither here nor there in terms of gender. That’s an incredible thing. It’s such a leap forward,” she added.
However, Johnson was quick to point out that this level of openness is not universal. While her Malibu lifestyle reflects a more liberal approach, she acknowledged that other parts of the world remain less accepting. “Then there’s Alabama, and Texas, and the rest of the world that is in complete disarray,” Johnson remarked, highlighting the stark contrasts that still exist within different societies.
Beyond her thoughts on sexuality, Johnson has also been vocal about her struggles with mental health. Over the years, the actress has battled depression and anxiety, conditions that she has increasingly come to accept as part of her life. “I’ve explored everything, which is such a gift,” she said, reflecting on her journey. “I’ve started to be less and less ashamed of it. There’s such a weird stigma on depression and mental health. It’s hard.”
Johnson’s openness about her mental health and sexuality is a testament to her strength and resilience. Her ability to navigate these deeply personal aspects of her life in the public eye has made her an inspiring figure for many. As she continues to grow both personally and professionally, Dakota Johnson remains a powerful advocate for self-discovery, mental health awareness, and the importance of an open-minded upbringing.
