Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently reminisced about his first encounter with teammate Travis Kelce, highlighting their instant connection and mutual respect. During a press conference at the Super Bowl LVIII Opening Night event on Monday, Mahomes shared his initial impressions of the star tight end, describing Kelce as “a great dude.”

Mahomes, 28, recalled his early days with the Chiefs and how he was already aware of Kelce’s prowess on the field. “I knew of him obviously, because he was such a great football player even before I got [to the Chiefs],” Mahomes told PEOPLE at the Allegiant Stadium. “I think my biggest impression was, ‘that’s a tall guy,’ because I’d never seen a guy that tall man be able to move like that.”

However, it wasn’t just Kelce’s physical attributes that stood out to Mahomes. “But just a good dude, man, I think I knew that from day one,” he added, emphasizing the positive vibes he felt from their first interaction.

Their friendship began to solidify during Mahomes’ first week with the team in 2017, shortly after he was drafted by the Chiefs. Kelce, who had been with the team since 2013, extended a warm welcome to Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes. The trio bonded over a Kansas City Royals game, an experience Mahomes fondly remembers.

“We were sitting up front, we were having a great time and that’s kind of built part of the relationship that we have today,” Mahomes shared.

This strong off-field relationship has undoubtedly contributed to their exceptional on-field chemistry. As the Chiefs prepare for another Super Bowl, the bond between Mahomes and Kelce remains a cornerstone of their success.

Kelce’s ability to connect with teammates and his reputation as a genuinely good person continue to be key aspects of his legacy with the Chiefs. As Mahomes and Kelce gear up for another shot at the championship, their mutual respect and camaraderie will be crucial in their quest for victory.
