In a heartfelt statement reflecting her enduring commitment to equality and kindness, country music legend Dolly Parton has spoken out in support of transgender rights and the broader LGBTQ+ community. The celebrated singer emphasized the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of their identity.
“I try not to get into the politics of everything. I try to get into the human element of it,” Parton remarked. “I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees.”
Parton’s inclusive outlook is deeply personal. She elaborated, “I’ve got transgender people. I’ve got gays. I’ve got lesbians. I’ve got drunks. I’ve got drug addicts — all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge.” Her words underline a profound understanding and acceptance of diverse identities and experiences.
She poignantly noted the emotional struggles faced by many within the LGBTQ+ community, saying, “I see how broken-hearted they get over certain things. I understand how real they are.” For Parton, these are not abstract issues but deeply human ones, deserving of empathy and support.
“I know how important this is to them. That’s who they are,” she continued. “They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton, you know, the way people know me.”
In a powerful conclusion, Parton asserted, “If there’s something to be judged, that is God’s business. But we are all God’s children and how we are is who we are.”
Parton’s remarks come at a time when the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender individuals, faces increasing legislative challenges. In March, Tennessee passed a bill defining “sex” strictly based on “a person’s immutable biological sex as determined by anatomy and genetics existing at the time of birth.” Later that month, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a law banning transgender athletes from participating in sports teams that align with their gender identity. These measures are part of a broader wave of anti-trans legislation introduced across the United States this year.
As laws and policies continue to shape the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals, voices like Dolly Parton’s provide a beacon of compassion and understanding, advocating for a world where everyone is treated with the kindness and respect they deserve.
